Ninemile Ranger Station

Above you can see a slideshow of photos from the Ninemile Roof Project. The Engine Barn at the Ninemile Ranger Station on the Lolo National Forest was in need of a new cedar shingle roof.  Doug Hunt, Exhibits Specialist II, assisted with this project and helped train personnel. The work was accomplished in June, which included setting scaffolding around the entire building, tearing off the old roof, laying ice and water shield, laying a new cedar shingle roof, and removing the scaffolding.

Lochsa Ranger Station

Here we can see the crew working on the beautiful Lochsa Ranger Station. The historic Lochsa Ranger Station consists of several historic structures in need of preservation work. The first step this June was to start the reroof project on the south side of the Ranger’s House.  Geof Hochmuht, Exhibits Specialist III, assisted with setting scaffolding around the south, east, and west sides of the building, tearing off the old roof, repairing the sheathing, removing and repairing the rotted rafter tails, cleaning out the attic space, laying ice and water shield, laying a new cedar shingle roof, training personnel in roofing techniques, and removing the scaffolding.

Skookum Butte Lookout

The Skookum Butte Lookout, a log grange-hall style lookout, is located on the Missoula District of the Lolo National Forest.  This lookout is undergoing a four year preservation project, including repairing and replacing logs, windows, roofing, flooring, as well as the door. Work began this July with repairing and replacing the logs in two of the walls along with removing the windows for future repairs.  Byron Williams, Exhibits Specialist III, and Doug Hunt, Exhibits Specialist II, assisted with this project and helped train Forest Service personnel and volunteers.
